Full-Time

Days and Rotating Weekends

The Lab Supervisor performs analysis on laboratory specimens. Demonstrates expertise and responsibility for one or more areas of the laboratory. Acts as a primary resource person for that area(s). May instruct students in the Medical technology Program. Maintains records of performance as defined by the Laboratory's administrative and sectional operating procedures. Prepares for the accreditation process.

Responsibilities

Key Accountability

  • Accurately maintains the necessary procedures, documentation, and records to ensure the section of the laboratory is inspection ready to meet CAP guidelines and all applicable standards and regulations including the FDA, AABB, DNV, HCFA, and OSHA
  • Takes responsibility to ensure delivery of quality and effective services, implements, maintains, and monitors, programs for quality control, preventative maintenance, proficiency surveys and indicators
  • Works with the pathologists and Laboratory Medical Director to designate, implement and perform staff competency assessments
  • Completes annual performance reviews for staff as defined by UPH
  • Orientates new staff to policies, procedures, and instrumentation
  • Demonstrates technical and operational expertise
  • Interprets quality control results and instrument function
  • Completes scheduled preventive maintenance duties
  • Provides assistance and guidance involving repairs, validations, and function checks
  • Organizes, prioritizes, executes and interprets workload. Actively assists coworkers with interpretations and troubleshooting and possible follow-up corrective actions
  • Resource management: Assists and monitors necessary supplies and kit availability for patient testing. Responsible for following manufacturer's recommended instructions for utilizing testing material and kits. Assists with reagent orders from vendors.
  • Technical and teaching assistance: Provides operational training for coworkers involving manual, automated, and organizational skills for patient testing. Provides knowledge acquired thru experience and training to assist new hires and current coworkers
  • Be available and help Phlebotomy services draw blood from patients in the Out Patient area located in the laboratory.
  • Work weekend shifts on a normal rotation
  • Practices good communication skills with internal and external customer

  • Maintains composure and professionalism involving conflicts with internal and external customers.
  • Unusual conditions/conflicts
  • Organizes and adapts to changes in workflow due to instrumentation or computer downtimes
    Provides solutions and technical support to aid in delivery of patient care
  • Assures patient care in unusual conditions/conflicts is not compromised
  • Assists and monitors necessary supplies, kits, reagents, and equipment availability for patient testing
  • Maintains and plans replacement schedule for all non-capital and fixed (capital) equipment
  • Provides training for co-workers and new hires as well as didactic and bench instruction of the Medical Technology students
  • Assumes responsibility for personal technical and managerial competency and continuing education by attending professional meetings, workshops, UPH Leadership Institutes
  • Participates in quality assurance and actively participates in investigations involving unexpected or adverse outcomes; provides solutions and technical support to aid in delivery of patient care.

  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Qualifications

Education:

Baccalaureate degree with a major in Medical Technology or related science

Experience:

Prefer 2 - 5 years of hospital clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency

Prefer 3-7 years of hospital clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Certified as a Medical Technologist by the Board of Registry of ASCP or equivalent

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Decision making Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
